Well luckily for us, the weatherman got it wrong yet again. Although today's forecast called for thunderstorms, those who made it to the annual Grand Beach Training and Family Picnic put on by Budo IKD Manitoba only got wet from being in the water. The day was hot but with adequate cloud coverage that kept everyone from overheating. We even saw the sun on a few occasions. Best of all, NO RAIN.
This annual event has been a tradition with Sensei Clive Hinds, Sensei Debbie Hinds, and Sensei Ron Porath. Each year, more and more people have come out to train with them. Today marked the 16th year of the annual beach training, and as you can see from the photos below, there was quite the group in attendance. Dojos in attendance were Winnipeg Budokai, Charleswood Karate, Stonewall Karate, Lac du Bonnet Karate Club, Heijoshin Karate, and UND Hisshou Karate, the latter group who drove all the way from Grand Forks, North Dakota!
Class started on the sand, and then quickly moved into the waters of Lake Winnipeg. Several of the senior black belt women were invited up to take the class through some fun and creative drills (most of which involved splashing the people around you). Class ended with karateka who were celebrating, or recently celebrated, birthdays to run through a gaunlet (alternating attacking a person in each line as fast as you can), and finally with dunking Shihan Clive Hinds into the water in celebration of his recent promotion to 7th DAN, which he earned at the IKD World Camp this past June. Congratulations everyone!
After drying off, a long lineup was formed for the potluck family picnic, and as always the food was excellent. Many thanks to those who helped set up while the rest of us were taking class. Being near the end of the line myself, I was worried that there wasn't going to be any food left, but there was still plenty of good eats to be had.
It was another great beach training day, and I look forward to next year's event.
To all my students, have a great summer holiday, and we'll see each other again in September.
